Associate – Operations & Regulatory Team

Reading | Permanent | Hybrid (2–3 days office based)

Are you a regulatory lawyer looking for high-quality work in the utilities sector? This is an exciting opportunity to join the Operations & Regulatory team of a leading international law firm on a permanent basis.

You’ll be part of a small, specialist team supporting a major utilities client on a wide range of regulatory and operational matters. Working closely with senior lawyers, you’ll manage your own caseload while also collaborating across property, commercial, construction, competition and litigation teams.

Responsibilities include:

  • Advising on regulatory matters linked to water and waste (e.g. water resources, street works, charges schemes, statutory powers)
  • Drafting and reviewing regulatory documents
  • Liaising with subject matter experts across different legal disciplines
  • Providing clear, practical advice to the client in writing and in meetings
  • Delivering regulatory training to business and management teams
  • Keeping up to date with relevant legislation and industry developments

Requirements:

  • Qualified solicitors or barristers with 3+ years PQE (regulated sector experience desirable)
  • Lawyers with knowledge of utilities, water, environmental or infrastructure regulation (or the ability to get up to speed quickly) preferred
  • Confident communicators, able to work independently and manage a varied caseload
  • Team players who enjoy collaboration and building strong client relationships
  • In-house experience and prior exposure to the water or wider utilities sector would be an advantage but aren’t essential.

What’s on Offer:

  • Hybrid working: 2–3 days per week in the client’s Reading HQ, rest remote
  • Exposure to varied, high-quality regulatory and commercial work within a collaborative environment
  • Ongoing training and professional development opportunities
  • Competitive salary and benefits package

This is a fantastic opportunity to build deep expertise in regulatory law within a sector that impacts millions of people every day.
